 Columbia Valley Birding & Checklist

Columbia Valley Birding

We love our birding!

Nested safely between the ancient peaks of the Canadian Rockies and Purcell Mountains is the Columbia Valley Bird Trail; taking in the communities of Golden, Radium Hot Springs, Invermere, Fairmont Hot Springs, Canal Flats and continuing south to Cranbrook and Kimberley.

The Upper Columbia Valley comes alive with birds in early Spring. Ducks like cinnamon teal, ring-necked, bufflehead, ruddy and redhead begin to show up. Joining them on the water are Trumpeter Swans, horned grebes and mallards to name just a few. If you catch it just right, you may see the Black-necked Stilt visiting briefly before moving along. Songbirds fill the air waves with their busy chatter and mating calls. A highlight of the region, Lewis’s woodpecker also returns for the warmer months and we have an event specifically created for viewing these magnificent birds.
