Rachel Darvill

Rachel Darvill’s primary passion is biodiversity conservation and research. Working as a biologist and environmental consultant, she has nearly two decades of experience and is the primary consultant at Goldeneye Ecological Services. Most recently, Rachel developed and launched a new 5-year citizen-science initiative entitled the Columbia Wetlands Waterbird Survey (CWWS). With great success, 2015 marked the first year of the program. With participation from over 50 citizen scientists, over 14,000 individual birds were counted during the spring migration surveys and nearly 40,000 individual birds were counted during the fall migration surveys! An additional 43 high school students participated in fall migration surveys and 133 elementary students participated in outdoor birding field trips. Rachel is hopeful that collecting bird baseline data will enable the Wetlands to acquire ‘Important Bird Area’ status; she also believes the CWWS will help create additional long lasting benefits such as restoration and habitat enhancement opportunities, educational initiatives and increased stewardship.

Rachel completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Victoria in 2000 and her Master of Science degree in Environment and Management from Royal Roads University in 2014. She sits on the Board of Directors for the Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners and on the Columbia Basin Water Quality Monitoring Program’s Steering Committee where she leads the Upper Columbia Water Quality Monitoring Program. Amongst the many wildlife research projects Rachel has worked on, her favorites were at the Triangle Island Seabird Research Station, with Ancient Murrelets on Gwaii Haanas, and researching Common Ravens in the Alaskan Arctic.
